The Brazilian government has stated that a ransomware attack hit its National Treasury on 13 August.

A statement from finance ministry said that the early measures to control the effect of the cyberattack were quickly taken. The first evaluations have so far discovered there was no harm to the structuring systems of the National Treasury, such as the platforms pertaining to public debt administration.

Security experts from the National Treasury are examining the ramifications of the ransomware attack, while the Federal Police have also been notified. The ministry observed new information on the event will be revealed in a timely manner and with due transparency.

Another statement released together with the Brazilian Stock Exchange on August 16 noted that the had no impact on the operations of Tesouro Direto – a program that allows the acquisition of Brazilian government bonds by individuals.

The incident at the National Treasury comes on the heels of a major cyberattack that occurred in November 2020, against the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court, bringing the court’s systems to a halt for over a fortnight. At the time, the incident was considered to the most critical attack ever executed against a Brazilian public sector institution, in terms of its intricacy and the extension of the damage caused.
