A cyber criminal has reportedly hacked Microsoft’s private employee’s GitHub account and has downloaded some of the company’s private GitHub repositories.

The attack is thought to occurred in March, and emerged this week when the hacker said he would publish some of the stolen ventures on a hacking medium.

Several Microsoft employees have confirmed that at least a small share of the stolen files is reliable. It is also believed that the hacker did not gain access to the source code of any key Microsoft core ventures, such as Windows and Office.

Microsoft employees have said that such major ventures are hosted inside at Microsoft and not on the company’s public GitHub portal.

The number of private repositories the hacker is believed to have acquired is around 1,200.

A Microsoft spokesperson said that the company is probing the incident, but stopped short of commenting further.

However, as per confirmed sources, files and directories included on the list the hacker shared did certainly contain ventures that were saved in Microsoft’s GitHub account as private repositories.

Other Microsoft employees made their valuation public, also approving the leak’s legitimacy.

Microsoft engineers who earlier claimed that “the leak was a scam” have now recanted their remarks as news of the leak spread inside the company, and some employees established its limited legitimacy.

Employees who commented openly on the leak as being a rip-off have also erased their tweets.
