Mercedes-Benz USA has complained that personal sensitive information concerning its customers was exposed by a vendor. The compromised information includes 1.6 million records that contain email addresses, phone numbers, names, addresses, and other details of the vehicles that have been purchased.


The German carmaker says that the sensitive personal information has affected less than 1000 customers and potential buyers. The information comprises dates of birth, social security number, credit card details, self-reported credit scores, and driver’s license number.


The company has confirmed that the information exposed to the cloud storage platform was not configured right but later kept secure. The company has also said that in order to get access to the information, a person requires an understanding of special software programs and internet search results do not return the files or data that possess this information. The carmaker has also started to inform those whose additional information was accessible to all.


As per the company’s statement, it was their understanding that the information was entered by the customers or potential buyers on the dealer the information was entered on the company’s website during the span of 3 years, January 1, 2014 and June 19, 2017. However, the system hasn’t been compromised due to the incident. Mercedes-Benz USA has also confirmed that they have found no evidence of the misuse of any files.
