On Tuesday, May 4th, 2021, the organization which is responsible to provide internet facilities to the Belgian parliament, scientific institutions, government agencies, and universities confirmed that the organization’s network has become a victim of a cyberattack. This attack could potentially pose a threat to the government’s security system that could threaten confidential matters of the state.

In this situation, Belnet reported to the media that the attack is in continuation and their teams will be working hard to diminish its impact on the security system. The company of over 200 employees took two hours to weaken effects of the cyberattack.

The reporters of Belgian media found out that due to the attack on the security system, the online facilities for coronavirus vaccination centres have faced disturbance. They also confirmed that offices of the concerned authorities such as prosecutors have confronted issues in Brussels.

Belnet or Belgian National research and education network has given out the statement of its director, Dirk Haex who stated that the company has been operative since 1993 but the attack of this magnitude has taken place for the first time in history. He also mentioned that it is not an easy attack to fight back.
Moreover, Haex mentioned that there has been no leak of the greatest information of the state. He confirmed that the purpose of this attack was to disarm the system and not to steal the information.
