The technology entrepreneur and the creator of antivirus software, John McAfee has passed away in a prison cell in Barcelona. McAfee was arrested and extradited by the US government for his cryptocurrency frauds and for deliberately not filing tax returns.
The security personnel and medical team tried to save him but he was pronounced dead as he hung himself. The regional Catalan government stated that they will investigate the reason for death however, the suicide is quite evident.
McAfee, 75 years old, was arrested in October 2020 when he was ready to board the flight to Istanbul from Barcelona’s International Airport. He had been in jail and was anticipating the further process of extradition. According to the report, McAfee was earning more than 10 million euros and didn’t file the tax return or report income from promoting cryptocurrencies.
The Chicago-based attorney, Nishay Sanan defended his case said that McAfee will always be remembered as a fighter. She added that the late entrepreneur loved his country but the government of the USA did not make it possible for him to exist in the country. She claimed that the government tried to erase McAfee but they failed.
The lawyer also mentioned that he has demanded the camera footage of McAfee’s prison cell to investigate the cause of death as the Spanish authorities have failed to do so. Currently, the US Attorney’s Office has refused to give out a statement.
John McAfee was born in Gloucestershire, England in 1945. He established McAfee Associates in 1987 and preferred to live an unconventional life. He sold his stakes in the antivirus software company.
